Ignoring the root causes that led to the convoy occupation in the first place

The idea that the important thing to debate is whether the Emergencies Act should have been invoked or not is not right.

The point to deliberate is how to address the root causes of genuine grievances, some misunderstandings and outright lies that led to the convoy occupation in the first place.

As long as those factors are in place, we will face the same convoy in its worst forms, undermining both our national security and community cohesion.

Interestingly, while our leaders are busy debating whether the Emergencies Act should have been invoked, there are 300 plus groups fully active and dedicated to spreading hate in Canada. “If this was any other type of crime, we’d be calling it a national crisis” (Dr. Barbara Perry, director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the UOIT) and debating that instead.
